HYÉRES: HALF WAY

McMahon Sets High Bar on Opening Day of Gold Fleet Racing in Hyéres

Event organisers quoted "Epic Mistral baptises the next Olympic generation in Hyères" after today's racing at the Second Grand Slam of the season.

Sailors all agreed that today's conditions in Hyéres were tough, epic, survival conditions.

“Epic”, “Crazy”, “Nothing like it” and many words too colourful to include... There is no sailing regatta in the world like French Olympic Week in Hyères when the Mistral blasts over 25 knots into the Bay under blue skies in brilliant sunshine.

Ewan McMahon (Howth Yacht Club) came away from the first day of Gold Fleet racing with the most impressive total scores of the day, excluding Hungarian Sailor Jonatan Vadnai. He sailed a solid sixth and fourth in the two races of the day, pushing him back up into 8th overall with the medal race coming on Saturday.

Sibling Eve McMahon (Howth Yacht Club) over on the ILCA 6 Gold Fleet course had a mixed day with a disqualifcation (UFD), a fifth and a 25th. She sits in 18th going into tomorrows racing.

"Eve is sailing really well, but just like in Palma, Jury yellow flags and a BFD are keeping her from the top results. We have two more races tomorrow and we still believe with two solid performances, we can make the medal race on Saturday" Irish Sailing ILCA 6 Coach Vasilij Zbogar
