Instructor Pre-Requisites

To qualify as an Instructor, there is a standard of personal skill and background knowledge required.

Assistant Instructor Course Pre-requisites

Age

You must be a minimum of 15 years old to attend the course.

Requirements

You must hold one or more of the following Irish Sailling SBSS Advanced certificates;

  • Advanced Boat Handling
  • Kites & Wires
  • Adventure Skills
  • Start Racing

Garda Vetting clearance (via Irish Sailing);

  • 15 years - cannot be vetted.
  • 16 years - recommended.
  • 17 years - required.

Sport Ireland Safeguarding 1 (Child Protection);

  • 15 years - cannot attend.
  • 16 years - recommended.
  • 17 years - required.

Course Details

  • 14-hours course duration.
  • Facilitated by a SBSS Senior Instructor.
  • Organised by host Training Centre.

Training Centres are encouraged to utilise the Assistant Instructorship as part of a Trainee Instructor Programme.
Encourage Assistants to create a pathway to Instructorship and support them by providing opportunities for development such as leading briefings or skills demonstrations, with guidance from the Instructor team.

SBSS Instructor Course Pre-requisites

Age

You must be a minimum of 16½ years old to attend the course – certificates will only be issued when you turn 17.

  • 5-days duration.
  • 3-year certificate validity.
  • Organised and priced by a host Training Centre with an Instructor Trainer.
  • Ratio 1:8

 

NPTS Instructor Course Pre-Requisites

Age

You must be a minimum of 16½ years old to attend the course – your certified will be issued when you turn 17.

  • 3-year certificate validity.
  • Organised and priced by a host Training Centre with an Instructor Trainer.

When are the courses run?

Courses can be run year-round by any host Training Centre but are most commonly run during school holidays ...

What powerboat qualification and experience do I need?

  • An Irish Sailing National Powerboat Certificate.
  • Endorsed for both tiller and console controls.
  • Plus 20-hours of logged powerboating hours.

What if I already hold a different Irish Sailing Instructor qualification?

You can do an Instructor Conversion course ...

  • 2-day Instructor Conversion for any of the SBSS instructors to convert to another SBSS Instructor
    e.g. Dinghy to Keelboat, Keelboat to Dinghy 
  • 3-day Instructor Conversion for a Powerboat or Windsurfing Instructors to an SBSS Instructor/ vice versa.
